Institute for General and Hungarian Linguistics
The main focus of the Institute for General and Hungarian Linguistics is basic research in language theory and experimental and Hungarian linguistics: language theory, phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics. Further general goals are the development of spoken language databases and methods supporting the assessment and rehabilitation practices of first language acquisition and development.

Research at the Institute encompasses several aspects of the history of the Hungarian language. This includes the history of the language in the narrow sense; the systematic study of other Uralic languages; various forms of language contact and areal features; the study of the dialects of Hungarian; but also the systematic study of Latin, a language that had a great impact on the development of Hungarian.

The tasks of the Institute: conducting language technology research and development, building and maintaining language resources and language technology infrastructures; compilation of electronic text databases for corpus linguistics research; conducting research on language usage and naming questions, providing consultation services regarding language use, linguistic dissemination and science communication; sociopragmatics, theoretical and practical research of Hungarian and other minority languages.

The Institute for Lexicology’s main project at present is to compile the Comprehensive Dictionary of Hungarian and maintenance of the database of the New Hungarian Etymological Dictionary; compiling a new version of a monolingual explanatory dictionary partly based on the Explanatory Dictionary of the Hungarian Language by corpus-driven methods; research in the field of lexicography.
