The predecessor of the Institute of Lexicology is the Lexicographic Department, which has been producing monolingual dictionaries since the 1950s. This working team created A magyar nyelv értelmező szótára 1–7. (’Explanatory Dictionary of Hungarian’, chief editors: G. Bárczi and L. Országh; Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, 1959–1962), and its shortened version, Magyar értelmező kéziszótár (’Concise Hungarian Explanatory Dictionary’, abbr. ÉKsz., edited by J. Juhász, I. Szőke, G. O. Nagy, and M. Kovalovszky; Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, 1972).

The Institute for Lexicology’s main project at present is to compile theComprehensive Dictionary of Hungarian (chief editor: N. Ittzés, Nyelvtudományi Kutatóközpont, Budapest, 2006-).The dictionary will principally contain the literary and common vocabulary of the Hungarian language in one hundred ten thousand entries. It is a corpus based dictionary and being written in XML database format, and appears in both printed and electronic form.

The Institute for Lexicology has several other tasks:

  • maintenance of the database of the New Hungarian Etymological Dictionary;
  • compiling a new version of a monolingual explanatory dictionary partly based on the Explanatory Dictionary of the Hungarian Language  by corpus-driven methods;
  • research in the field of lexicography;
  • conducting lexicological research on current and historical Hungarian vocabulary.

The institute played a key role in the COST European Network of e-Lexicography (2013–2017), and it was a main partner institution in the ELEXIS project (2018–2022). The institute is involved in the COST Action (CA21167) UniDive project from 2022.

Kutatók Éjszakája: Ki dönti el, mit jelentenek a szavak?

Érdekel a magyar nyelv? Gyakran elgondolkodsz azon, honnan is ered egy-egy szó? Gyűjtöd a kevésbé ismert, érdekes kifejezéseket? Szereted a nyelvi fejtörőket?
