helyesiras.mta.hu – Spelling Advisory Portal

On April 30, 2013, the spelling advisory portal, helyesírás.mta.hu, was opened to the public. The portal was created to assist individuals interested in writing with precision in certain areas of Hungarian spelling using automatic tools. The backbone of the portal consists of seven automatically functioning applications: Separate or Together?, Is it Correct?, Name Finder, Hyphenation, Numbers, Dates, Alphabetical Sorting.

The uniquely innovative Separate or Together? module not only informs users how to write expressions such as “használtautó-kereskedés” (used car dealership), “macskatápszer” (cat food), “papagájkiállítás” (parrot exhibition), “nyersselyem ing” (raw silk shirt), but also provides explanations for the spelling by automatically citing the appropriate rules of the regulation. This is particularly useful when different meanings of the expression require different spellings, as we see in the case of “sárgabarack” (apricot). In such cases, the system provides a separate explanation for each spelling.

The static content of the portal (The Rules of Hungarian Spelling, as well as the archive of questions and answers collected by the language advisory service of the Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences) also contributes to navigating Hungarian spelling.
