Subject licensing and agreement in non-finite embedded clauses in Mari

The talk focuses on infinitival clauses in Mari (Uralic) that allow dative subjects and optional subject agreement (INFL). I discuss these constructions in detail and argue that no subject Case is available within the infinitival TP itself and that no functional head in the embedded clause is responsible for INFL. Instead, I propose that dative is assigned by a higher functional head of a specific type, and INFL depends on a predication relation and does not manifest Agree. These two claims are then generalized: the availability of dative subjects and INFL in infinitival clauses is always determined by the syntactic structure outside the non-finite TP.
