Names Working Group

For many decades, the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics has been obliged by law to provide expert opinions on the registrability of new applications for given names and from 1 July 2023 for surnames changes as well. It is also obliged to provide assistance, information and counseling on personal names by email.

The main research tasks of the Names Working Group are

1. archiving of existing name records,
2. socio-onomastic research and publishing the results in scientific journals,
3. dissemination of research results and of our knowledge base to the largest
   possible public.

An important task is to disseminate information and to give lectures on naming traditions, customs, name fashion etc.
On the Facebook page maintained by the Names Working Group, educational articles for the current name day are being constantly prepared, as well as useful and interesting pieces of information on names and naming are shared.
